Takashi Miike’s Awesome Asian Horror

January 25th, 2010 by Amy received 1 Comment »

I would like to start out by saying that I’ve loved horror movies since I was VERY young; and always it’s been the bizarre, twisted, and reality bending flicks that intrigue me and also scare the shit out of me. I’m talking things that I haven’t seen, but read in, Douglass Clegg’s “You Come When I Call You” .The perfect medley of blood and guts, something paranormal, with ordinary faces, and in seemingly ordinary circumstances, with the ability to use your own imagination to finish the story.

American Horror is great! Zombies, serial killers, demons, I could go on and on. And I love them all. But it’s when I ventured out of my box and onto some creepy Japanese Horror that I found that void filled. My boyfriend had watched them and just said, “These are some really weird movies, you should watch them!” So one day, months later, and after a reminder from my friend Mark who also watched them, I came home from school and watched Takashi Miike’s “Imprint”.

A man had fallen in love with an asian prostitute, but unfortunatley had to leave her. Of course, he promises to come back for her.
By the time he gets back to her she’s not there. Luckily a conversation with a fellow Geisha enlightens him to the story of Kimomo, his missing lover.

Simple story enough, even romantic. But, this story isn’t right. The young Geisha telling the story has stories of her own, stories of love, then of chaos. A scar upon her face and flawless beauty on the other side of her face. She sadly leads this gentleman into a wild goose chase of stories and all the twists, gore, blood, and wonderful things you could ask for. Even, a happy ending, if you can call it that. It was rather “bizarre”.

Luckily this particular movie was done for the Masters of Horror and they speak english, which allows you to REALLY focus on what you’re watching and the wretched, vomit laden, grotesquely beautiful thoughts you’re having while watching.

After watching this movie, I was thwarted back to the time when I read “You Come When I Call You” and the satisfaction of that story. It made me giddy inside. Ready for more Miike. So the next day after school I popped in “Audition”. Yet another simple story gone wrong.

A middle aged, widowed gentleman looking for love and the subtle push of the tongue by his teen son to do so. So his film producer friend offers to hold a fake audition to find a woman that he likes. And it works!!! Yay guy, right? I mean, she’s kind, respectful, speaks elloquantly, and was a ballerina for god’s sake. It’s a godsend for an almost geiser like him. But not so much. Well maybe at first yeah, but we all know the newness wears off. Especially when you can’t find her because her resume is fake, and nothing matches up. Damn it, she told me to love only her and now I don’t see her anymore…boohoo. Should have counted your blessings, but you kept pressing. Be careful what you look for you just might find a nice, sweet, pretty, little killer under there. A killer with awkwardly abnormal things she collects.

Again, very good. So Mr. Miike, I salute you and your grotesque visions. And I give you 4 1/2 ghost peppers.

*Yes, I’m intigrating the pepper system rather then the star system. Peppers and hot, simple as that.
