My Tech N9ne Experience

February 6th, 2010 by Amy received No Comments »

On Friday Feb 5, Brandon, Jesse and I went to a sold out Tech N9ne concert at the Black Sheep. After standing in line, outside in the cold, for nearly 2 hours we finally made it inside. Surprisingly it wasn’t THAT crowded. We ordered some drinks (yeah I actually drank a whole beer) and chilled out by the bar. Unfortunately we missed one of the first artists to play, but got lucky enough to see Black Pegasus. I’ve never heard of him before, but he’s local and was really good. The crowd was pumped and stayed pumped throughout the whole concert.

When Tech was finally about to appear I downed my beer and moved forward into the crowd to get my dance on. I was really amazed by the variety of people that showed up to see him. (Below you will see some pictures of the dedicated fans). The best was a young gentleman with awesome face paint, two couples where the guys also wore face paint, an older guy who looked like Booger from Nerds, and a dwarf who rocked it out with the best of them (who I also saw at the signing). Despite the bitter cold many girls showed up in very skimpy outfits and I bet nearly froze to death waiting to get in.

Tech kicked it off and the crowd, and myself, just went nuts. He was amazing. Adorned with white face paint and “RAW” upon his forehead, he jammed out for a couple of hours to an audience that was pure energy and very intimate. The next day at the signing he told me that he prefers to play small venues because of the intimacy with the crowd.

It’s hard to put into words how much this concert kicked ass. Being a rap concert I expected some level of immaturity and violence, but was surprised there was very little, even with the audience being mostly teenagers. I danced through his whole set, which later made me ache, but I’m nearly 30 so I’m not as spry as I was when I was 15. One of the first concerts where I let my insecurities go and just danced the night away, singing and swaying my arms to the music.

He played old songs, new songs, and an especially funny song about the areola after being shown boobs from six or seven chicks. Now while my favorite song (The Rain) wasn’t played I didn’t care because everything else rocked. Krizz Kalicko (who I also got an audiograph) accompanied him along with a couple other artists and they just all put on a great show.

Today, Tech and his crew were at Independent Records signing posters, CDs, and probably some body parts. After again waiting for nearly 3 hours (this time inside) I finally got to meet him for about 20 seconds. But, even though short, I was happy I waited. With my friend, Brandon at my side (Jesse was sick and couldn’t go) I approached Tech and was greeted with a smile and a hug (OMG, the first artist I’ve ever met). He signed a poster and a CD for me and I expressed how pleased I was with the concert the night prior. Tech was thankful to all his fans at the concert and the signing and seemed humbled by the support. He was truely a gentlemen and touched my heart by wearing a sweater that looked like Freddy Krueger’s famous sweater. Of course his PR people (again, pictures below) wouldn’t let us hold up the line by posing WITH Tech for a picture, but Brandon and I had a plan. He snapped shots while I met him and vice versa. And after going down the line of the artists that accompanied him and getting thier autographs we were out the door. All of them were polite and thank god none of them acted cocky. In fact quite the opposite.

This experience not only instilled my love for Tech N9ne (which I’ve only really known about for 4 years) but also made me a fan of Krizz Kalicko, Kutt Calhoune, and Big Scoob. I would definitely recommend seeing them if you have the chance.
